The Surgeon's Logbook

surgery + medicine + photography + food + travel

I needed a new blavatar (the image we see as the icon of a website) so I created one for my blog. It has the same design aesthetic of iOS icons, hehe. Madali lang pala gawin.

The Makings of a Master Surgeon

20120428-113407.jpg

For the past two days the second and third years have been attending surgical skills workshops organized by the department. We’ve been practicing vascular and bowel anastomosis on rubber tubes and cow intestines hopefully developing our skills and building confidence when the time comes when we’re the ones who’ll be doing these on actual patients.

These two essential skills of any surgeon, are probably the two toughest to master. So many morbidities, even mortalities, come from the “poor surgical technique” factor, begging the importance of these two workshops.

While med students practice on pigs legs on basic suturing, we residents also have this. Hehe

We’re also very honored to have been taught by the masters, Dr Concejero for the vascular anastomosis, famous for being one of the vascular surgeons of the first liver transplant in recent years; and Dr Dela Paz showing his superb skills on bowel anastomosis.

This is definitely a milestone in the makings of a master sugeon.

My New Toy

Finally got time to really cross one item out of my bucket list.

I’ve been thinking about getting a bike of my own since med school, initially out of KATAMARAN of walking everyday from FAURA to PEDRO GIL to get to class. (HAHAHA). Then the boards came, then first year surgery…the idea was eventually pushed back to the recesses of my brain.

Not until my co-resident Marc bought his own MTB last month that my lost feelings for biking resurfaced. Biking played a huge part in my childhood. I remember bringing our bikes to Himlayang Pilipino riding circles around the nitsos and lapidas.

How I wish I could re-live those moments.

Then TODAY came, when I had my day-off, with NOTHING to do. I was supposed to come home but I remembered that my WHOLE family was at Baler leaving me stuck in Manila. And being the impulsive buyer that I am, I bought a folding bike today, and all the other accessories I needed (helmet, gloves, lock), which of course took a huge chunk off my savings. Haha.

Anyway, kailangan lang SULITIN to, sayang naman. But I’m sure, basing from my first run this afternoon, IT FELT GREAT. 🙂

Thirty-one

Let the countdown begin 🙂

New Year, New Life

Media Noche

My media noche-slash-last supper. A blessed new year everyone! My sun phone is easier to reach than my globe. I feel like a dead man walking. Probably one of the saddest day of my life, but definitely one of the most memorable! Here’s to life-long learning & training and starting the long and tiring but fulfilling journey to becoming the surgeon that I want to be! Mazel Tov! 🙂

My Pummelvision

Tried pummelvision.com where you get to create your own slideshow from all the photos you’ve uploaded from either flickr or facebook. It’s amazing. 🙂 You get to have a short but sweet trip down memory lane! Arranged pa siya according to the date you’ve posted the album…so kung regular poster ka, talagang chronological ang pagkakasunod-sunod! =)
